Lot no. 298
Angelo ABRATE (1900-1985), "Vallée de Chamonix", oil on wood painted with a knife, signed lower left and annotated in pencil on the back. H. 22 x 33 cm This knife-painted work belongs to Angelo Abrate's first period, which lasted until 1944. The painting depicts the Bossons and Taconnaz glaciers, seen from Les Pêcles, with remarkable precision and a vibrant brushstroke that capture the majesty of the Alpine landscape. Born in Turin in 1900, Angelo Abrate was a self-taught painter who drew his inspiration from mountaineering and high-mountain landscapes. Influenced by the great masters Giovanni Segantini and Ferdinand Hodler, he transformed his love of the peaks into a unique source of artistic expression. His knife technique, which he perfected until 1944, gives his works a rich texture and a striking luminosity, and this painting bears witness to his singular approach, characterised by rich textures and a virtuoso knife technique that give his works an almost palpable relief. This style, typical of his early years, captures the raw, majestic beauty of the Alpine peaks, paying homage to nature in all its splendour. We would like to thank the Galerie Aux Trois Siècles for their positive opinion and the authentication of this work, which contributes to enriching its history and provenance.
