Angelo Dall'Oca Bianca (Verona 1858 - 1942) SPRING IN PIAZZA DELLE ERBE oil on panel, 35x19.5 cm signed and dated 'Verona 1890' lower right SPRING IN PIAZZA DELLE ERBE oil on panel, 35x19.5 cm signed and dated 'Verona 1890' lower right Through his views of his beloved Piazza delle Erbe, captured from a variety of perspectives and sometimes 'rebuilt' with artistic licence, the painter Angelo dall'Oca Bianca gained considerable success. Vibrant with joy, the square becomes the scene of a spring day in the admirable work entitled, precisely, Spring in Piazza delle Erbe (1889), an instant of life and vitality that the viewer finds himself observing from below, like an astonished child led by the painter's sure hand. And the eyes wander curiously between the sun-bathed figures, from the gait of the elegant lady on the right to the young couple on the left, fantasising about the words exchanged. But the undisputed star of the work (of which the artist had already executed a first version in 1884) is the young woman in the foreground, eternal in the fresh genuineness of her beauty, the instant her gaze casually falls upon us. And like a sudden focus on the main subject, everything else disappears in the panel presented in the catalogue. The field narrows to the young woman and even the couple is almost entirely covered by her figure. A charming pictorial poem by Angelo Dall'Oca Bianca dated 1890.
