Publication of Henriette d'Angeville's famous green notebook, with an introduction by Victor Augerd. Several manuscripts of the Carnet Vert exist, Henriette d'Angeville having written different drafts and versions. The same applies to the drawings, whether by Henriette d'Angeville herself, Jules Hébert, Henri Deville or Sain. Two major lots of manuscripts and drawings relating to Henriette d'Angeville's ascent of Mont Blanc have been sold in recent years: the first, in 2007, enriched the Payot collection of the Conseil Départemental de la Haute-Savoie, and the second was sold at Drouot on 26 February 2020 and is in private hands. These manuscripts, which I have been able to consult, although in Henriette d'Angeville's handwriting, do not correspond exactly to the green notebook published by Augerd and held by the family.
Henriette d'Angeville (Semur-en-Auxois 1794 - Lausanne 1871) came from the French nobility; during the Revolution, her father was taken prisoner and her grandfather was guillotined. The d'Angeville family settled in Hauteville-Lompnes, in the Bugey region of the Ain département. She took an interest in mountain climbing from an early age, and dreamed of climbing Mont Blanc, defying the prohibitions of the time. She achieved this feat on 3 September 1838, becoming the second woman after Chamonix-born Marie Paradis to reach the summit. She continued her mountaineering career until 1863, and towards the end of her life founded a mineralogy museum in Lausanne.
A fine copy of this very rare brochure.
