Lot no. 74
Anna BOCH (1848-1936). The entrance to the busy farm. Oil on panel. Size: 43 x 37 cm. Attached is a certificate of authenticity drawn up by Madame Thérèse Thomas, a specialist in Anna and Eugène Boch and author of the catalogue raisonné relating to Anna Boch. Anna Boch was born on 10 February 1848 in Saint-Vaast, in the Centre region of France. Her name will leave an indelible mark on the history of Belgian women's art. She was a pupil of Théo Van Rysselberghe. She evolved in luminist and impressionist painting. The elder sister of the painter Eugène Boch, she co-founded the Royal Boch - Keramis earthenware factory in La Louvière, and was also a member of the Villeroy & Boch company. She was a member of the Groupe des XX from 1886 and took part in the Salon des Beaux-Arts in Ostend in 1907 with Anna De Weert, Louise Danse and Marie Antoinette Marcotte. The Ostend chapter was completed 126 years later with the remarkable exhibition at the MU-ZEE in Ostend. The exhibition at the Musée de Pont-Aven was a significant event, and one that crossed borders. A great patron of the arts, she promoted young artists, including Vincent van Gogh, whom she admired for his talent and who was a friend of her brother Eugène Boch. She bought the only work Van Gogh managed to sell during his lifetime for 400 Belgian francs. Anna Boch died in 1936 and is buried in the Ixelles cemetery.
