Lot no. 286
YEARS 1843-1845 QUEEN MARIE-AMÉLIE" MINIATURE BRACELET The oval medallion is adorned with a miniature depicting Queen Marie-Amélie in a surround of rose-cut diamonds, set in 18K yellow gold with pearl and silver decoration. The bracelet consists of a wide plait of blond hair finished with engraved 18K yellow gold barrettes. Gross weight: 26.33 g (it comes with a removable brooch). Dimensions of the motif: 3.9 x 3.2 cm. Total length of the bracelet: 19 cm. Provenance : Acquired by collectors, "Turn und Taxis Collection" sale, Sotheby's Geneva, November 1992. A ROYAL GIFT FROM QUEEN MARIE-AMÉLIE IN 1843 The hair is said to be that of Queen Marie-Amélie, Queen of the French, which is not at all incredible given her proximity to the recipient of this jewel. The bracelet was made for her daughter, Princess Clémentine d'Orléans, on the occasion of her marriage to Prince Auguste of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in 1843. A year later, Marie-Amélie sent the same portrait painted by Mueret after Winterhalter to Queen Victoria. There is a large full-length portrait of Queen Marie-Amélie painted by Winterhalter and dated 1842. This oval miniature, probably painted at the same time, is taken from this magnificent portrait. Marie-Amélie was Marie-Antoinette's niece and was married to her distant cousin Louis-Philippe. She ruled alongside her husband from 1830 to 1848. The great families of Europe cross paths in our sale. Princess Clementine was the mother of Ferdinand, crowned king as Ferdinand I of Bulgaria. In the sale on 6 December, Tajan will be presenting an exceptional presentation snuffbox by the silversmith KAHN, a gift from Tsar Nicholas II to the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Dimitri Stancioff, in the presence of Ferdinand 1st. A diplomatic gift given during the negotiations for the Treaty of The Hague in 1899. A hair, diamond, silver and 18K yellow gold Queen Marie-Amélie bracelet, circa 1843-1845. Gross weight : 26,33 gr. (a removable brooch system). Design dimensions : 3,9 x 3,2 cm. Total length : 19 cm. Provenance: Acquired by collectors at the sale "Turn und Taxis Collection", Sotheby's Geneva, November 1992. A ROYAL GIFT FROM QUEEN MARIE-AMELIE IN 1843 The hair is said to have belonged to Queen Amélie, Queen of the French, which is not surprising given the proximity of the jewel's recipient.
