SEAWATER VERSUS FRESHWATER Fine losses all originate in water, some in seawater, others in freshwater. It's worth remembering the importance of freshwater pearls in history: The Romans were already familiar with freshwater pearls, which they brought from Scotland. This fact influenced their progress on the British Isle, where they looked for pearls. The Nordic countries, Saxony, Bohemia, Russia and France all produced pearls. Empress Maria Theresa of Austria owned an ornament from the Keselbach fisheries in Saxony. The German naturalist Von Essling estimates that over two centuries, more than four hundred and fifty thousand pearls (freshwater fines) were fished from German rivers.
