Lot no. 161
Anonymous (Japan, 20th century)
Print, dai oban tate-e, Festival at Asakusa temple. Unsigned. Printer Kajikawa Yoshio, engraver Torao Ishii.
Dim. 48 x 32,6 cm
Kajikawa Yoshio (born 1922) is the former president of the Japanese Association for Traditional Woodblock Printmaking (日本木版工芸組合). As only the names of the engraver and printer are known, it is possible that one of them was responsible for this print.
The lantern in the background bears the kanji 雷門 kaminarimon, indicating that it belongs to the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) at Asakusa Temple in Tokyo. The lantern at this temple did not bear these characters until the 1960s. So this print was made after that period.
