Lot no. 38
[ANONYMOUS]. Nuovo fior di virtu. Bergamo, Comin Ventura, 1594.
In-12, edition illustrated with one hors-texte engraving and 57 in-texte engravings as well as numerous engraved lettrines.
A fine and rare edition of this famous medieval moral compendium, originally written between 1310 and 1323 in Italy by a certain Brother Tommaso. The identity of this author has not been formally established. The text is sometimes attributed to Tommaso Gozzadini, but this hypothesis is disputed. The names of Tomasio Leoni, Francisco Sacchetti, Querubino Spoleto and Giovanni Antonio Traversagni have also been mentioned.
Bound in full red morocco with 5-ribbed spine by Niedrée.
(Traces of glue and very slight rubbing to the binding, slight restoration to the upper right-hand corner of the title page).
