[MANUSCRIPT ANTIPHONARY]. Cantus ecclesiasticus ad normam breviarii r[oma]ni universa continens quæ in choro cantari debent in dominica in albis usque ad Adventum Domini. [Italy, 18th century]. Calligraphied and illuminated musical manuscript on paper of [14], 301 pp. Large folio (74 x 54 cm), brown basane on ornate wooden boards, ornate metal framing, central cornice and umbilicus, clasp clasps, mute spine, blue edges, later leather bookmarks (Period binding). Monumental Italian manuscript antiphonary, with the music notated and the chants calligraphied in red and black. Rich ornamentation, painted and enhanced with gold leaf, including a title in a polychrome frame decorated with three vignettes, ten large miniatures depicting episodes from the New Testament, numerous painted lettering on a gold background, calligraphic initials and large coloured end-papers. The title features the emblem of the Order of Saint Augustine and, on the right, the arms of the important Bazzano or Bazzani family of Bologna, Montefestino and Vignola. Their arms were sculpted and painted in the Archiginnasio of Bologna for Giovanni Bazzani in 1626 and Lorenzo Bazzani in 1659. The church and monastery of San Giacomo in Bologna still belong to the Augustinians. (Cf. G. P. Very imposing binding on wooden ais trimmed with reinforcements and bouillons in wrought metal. Stain at top of first board, top cover missing, scuffing, one corner bent, clasps missing, worm work in margin of pp. 131-172.
