Lot no. 115
[ANTIPHONARY]. Collection of late 16th century liturgical chants from southern Spain (Granada).
In folio (44.5 x 31.5 cms) of 95 leaves calligraphed on sowskin recto and verso, with 5 staves of 5 lines per page, cold-stamped brown calf on wood, nailed copper spandrels and cabochons, traces of clasps, modern slipcase.
Imposing antiphonal manuscript in red and black, sometimes punctuated with yellow; unfortunately it has been vandalised and all the ornate letters have been cut out. The provenance is very interesting, however, as the last page states that it belonged to Ambrosio Cotes (1550-1603), a composer and choirmaster in various cathedrals.
"Ambrosio Cotes, aumônier de Sa Majesté et Maître de Chapelle à la Chapelle Royale de Grenade....". signed Ambrosio Cotes. 1 spandrel and 1 central cabochon are missing.
