Anton Steinhart was an Austrian painter and graphic artist. Steinhart came from a middle-class Salzburg family. As a child, he attended the private painting school of the Salzburg landscape painter Franz Hinterholzer at his own request. Steinhart travelled to England and Italy and studied in Munich and Paris. From 1915 to 1918, he took part in the First World War. From 1918, he lived in Salzburg again. Steinhart worked regularly as a photographer for Photo Ellinger, whose managing director was his sister Betty Platter, to earn his living. This resulted in numerous sketches and reed pen drawings of festival performances, which he published in a portfolio with Friedrich Welz in 1960. In addition to reed pen drawings, he also created oil paintings, mostly landscapes. Steinhart created numerous pictures during his months-long stays in Italy. Steinhart was close friends with Anton Faistauer, Alfred Kubin, Anton Kolig, and Carl Moll. Steinhart's paintings are in the Salzburg Museum (formerly the Salzburg Museum Carolino Augusteum), the Museum der Moderne Salzburg (formerly the Rupertinum), and the Albertina in Vienna. Exhibitions include "Junge Kunst im Dritten Reich" (Young Art in the Third Reich) at the Vienna Künstlerhaus in 1943, the Albertina in Vienna in 1945 and 1949, and the Neue Galerie Wolfgang Gurlitt Museum in Linz in 1956.
