In the foreground, a gently sloping shore with a jetty, a red lantern and a small wayside shrine with a Madonna figure; several covered fishing boats are anchored at the end of the jetty. The middle ground is dominated by the calm, waveless Mediterranean, behind which rises the majestic cone of the smoking Vesuvius, with the city of Naples at its feet.
