Lot no. 3
Antonio Anello, a male bust, marble
Antonio Anello
(active in Palermo, second half 17th century)
MALE BUST
marble sculpture with applied bronze plaque, inscription on the band ANTONIVS ANELLO PAN SCVLPTOR , cm 60x51x26, on black marble base, h. cm 16.5
The bust, which probably depicts a clergyman dressed in a cassock with a large hood, shows a chubby face slightly turned to his left, the face characterised by a linear moustache and thin strip of beard in the centre of the chin, with thick wavy hair. The attribution is suggested by the author himself, who signs his name in full on the ribbon that descends from his neck, a support for a medallion attached to the end, now lost and replaced by an 18th-century oval bronze plaque depicting the Virgin. Among the little information we have on Antonio Anello, a Palermitan sculptor of Gaginian training, we can recall that in 1673 he was the author of the statue depicting Saint Eustatius placed on the balustrade of the eastern façade of Palermo Cathedral.
