Antonio Tempesta (circle of) (1555 - 1639) - Clash of Horsemen Oil on canvas 172.5 x 222 cm The work is part of the early Baroque period, yet retains clear references to the language of late Mannerism. The composition is characterised by a pronounced narrative dynamism and a skilful use of chiaroscuro, which contributes to accentuating the drama and expressive tension of the scene. In terms of stylistic characteristics and compositional approach, the author is probably to be found among the artists active in the workshop of Antonio Tempesta, one of the main interpreters of historical and narrative painting in the late 16th and early 17th century. The work is presented in a 17th century coeval frame.
