The panel depicting the 'Madonna and Child' under examination is part of the complex story of the Vivarini workshop, a family of painters originally from Padua who moved to Murano in the 14th century, establishing on the island famous for its glassmaking one of the innovative hubs of Venetian art in the second half of the 15th century. The progenitor, Michele, was a glassmaker by trade; his sons, Antonio (c. 1418 - 1476/1484) and Bartolomeo (c. 1430 - after 1491), were to be painters of great renown, as was his nephew Alvise (1442/1453-1503/1505), son of Antonio, with whom the workshop was terminated, a painter of German origin, Giovanni di Alemagna (c. 1399 - 1450) and in which numerous talents flourished, such as Quirizio da Murano (active in Venice between 1460 and 1478), Andrea di Giovanni known as Andrea da Murano (documented between 1462 and 1502) and Lazzaro Bastiani (1429-1512).
The image is reflected, with subtle differences, in both Antonio's and Bartolomeo's production - of which, moreover, studies have shown the extensive collaboration, and not infrequent confusion - but at the same time presents qualitative deviations from the floruit of both, which have mostly led scholars to consider it a work of transition: of the former's old age or the latter's training period, or the alternation between the two, without excluding the possibility of another early personality connected to the workshop.
