ANTONIO ZANCHI (attr. to) (Este, 1631 - Venice, 1722) Adoration of the Shepherds Oil on canvas, 149.8X207.5 cm The canvas can be compared with the one sold on 31 May 1990, lot 81, at Christie's in New York, which, referred to Antonio Bellucci (oil on canvas, 174x165.3 cm) in Fabrizio Magani's catalogue raisonné, highlights the marked contribution made by Antonio Zanchi. Curiously, the same canvas was later referred to Stefano Magnasco in 1993 (London, Christie's, 10 December 1993, lot 96) and the same attribution was again upheld in 1999 (London, Christie's, 17 December 1999, lot 53). Having said this, the painting's Venetian origin and its contiguity with Zanchi and certain works by Alessandro Varotari known as il Padovanino is undoubted. Reference bibliography: P.
