ANTRAM, London, 1691-1723 Remarkable silver table watch enclosing an onion watch by its engraved dial and the back showing a portrait of a lady painted on enamel (very slight cracks). The stand has an engraved foot as was done in the 17th and 18th centuries, with sequences of decorations and medallions depicting characters. Such decorations were used on the façades of houses, particularly the one in Metz known as the House of the Heads. Sometimes they simply represented the owners of the house or important figures. In the case of the base of the support, we seem to be dealing with something exotic: one of the figures has an Asian profile wearing a long plait. Another is reminiscent of a South American Indian. The foot provides the ideal base for Atlas to support the watch, which, if the nape of the neck is anything to go by, is quite heavy. The onion has an opening on each side to allow the movement to be seen, and is topped by a child holding a bunch of grapes. Other figures are engraved around the rim. The decoration is in very good condition. Manual mechanical movement with key (present). Verge escapement movement, with chain, fusee. Very good condition. Functional at the time of the appraisal. Gross weight: 237.7 g.
