Lot no. 85
APOLLINAIRE (Guillaume). Calligrammes. Poèmes de la paix et de la guerre (1913-1916). Paris, Mercure de France, 1918. In-8, bradel green half vellum, paper boards imitating crocodile skin, untrimmed, cover and spine (Stroobants). First edition. Frontispiece with a portrait of the author by Pablo Picasso, wood-engraved by René Jaudon. Numbered copy of the first thousand on publisher's paper, well preserved despite the fragility of the paper. Attractive contemporary binding signed by Jean Stroobants, who died in 1922. The volume is enriched with the rare subscription form for Guillaume Apollinaire's Et moi aussi je suis peintre, an album of lyrical and coloured ideograms, which was due to appear in August 1914 but, because of the outbreak of war, remained in the printing proofs stage; these were not published for the first time until 1987.
