APOLLINAIRE Guillaume. Calligrammes. Poèmes de la paix et de la guerre (1913-1916). Paris, Mercure de France, 1918; in-8 paperback, 205-[1] pp. black and red printed cover, slipcase, pink leatherette spine. First edition decorated with a frontispiece portrait by Pablo Picasso, wood-engraved by the painter René Jaudon. After being wounded in 1916, Apollinaire began writing calligrams that could be rendered in printed books using the clichage process. Copy of the first thousand, on papier bouffant, with the "achevé d'imprimer" dated 15 April 1918 (no. 333). Autograph signed letter from the author to Paul Gsell (1870-1947), writer and theatre critic: A Monsieur Paul Gsell très amical souvenir. Apollinaire has changed his mind: he had originally written hommage. Cover and paper browned as with most copies. Small tear not missing at one joint.
