In-12, paperback; preserved with a set of original documents in a blue-grey morocco in-4 box with smooth spine titled in gold and red œser and interior compartments lined with light blue suede (C. de Séguier - P. Prouteau). First edition. This collection of tales was ready for printing before the war; the author only added the last short story. The volume is decorated with a portrait of Apollinaire with a head wound by André Rouveyre and its cover with a colour illustration by Leonetto Cappiello. The edition was not printed on large paper. A fine copy as issued. To this volume, Daniel Morcrette has attached an exceptional collection of original documents relating to the collection, mainly from the sales of the Guillaume Apollinaire collection: - a set of partly corrected proofs of the last fourteen tales in the collection and of five tales omitted from the definitive edition; 182 pages in-8, in sheets (pins enclosed separately). Precious document from the Apollinaire sale of 22 April 1994, no. 19. This is the only set of proofs of the Poète assassiné in private hands, the other three known to exist being held by the Bibliothèque littéraire Jacques Doucet, the BnF and the University of Texas (Austin). It includes: 1° an uncorrected set of all the short stories following the Roi-Lune in the original edition (pp. 177 to 311), in which the layout of the text, the pagination and sometimes even the text itself differ from the definitive edition; and 2° proofs of five previously unpublished short stories, omitted from the 1916 edition, including three sets of proofs corrected by the author's hand: La Comtesse d'Eisenberg (two sets of uncorrected proofs on different paper); L'Albanais (corrected proofs with the deliberate tear in the upper margin by which Apollinaire marked the proofs he had corrected); Le Robinson de la gare Saint-Lazare (two sets of proofs, one corrected with the author's marginal tear); La Noël des Milords (uncorrected proofs); Le Gastro-Astronomisme ou la Cuisine nouvelle (two sets of proofs, one corrected with the marginal tear and the other uncorrected bearing Apollinaire's stamp). - extract from an address book, 2 ff. in-16 of a diary for 1908 containing, on 2 1/2 pp., autograph addresses noted at a later date (around 1915?). It includes addresses for Derain, Léo Larguier, Duvernois, Mac Orlan, Georges Pioch, Tristan Tzara, etc. From the Apollinaire sale of 27 January 1992, no. 42. - Dondidondaine... Autograph poem of 20 lines on an in-8 sheet. The text published in Le Poète assassiné (XII. Amour, pp. 78-79) is substantially different. Verso, autograph draft of 5 lines that appear to be unpublished: "Des Errants merveilleux s'arrêtaient aux limites...". From the Apollinaire sale of 18 May 1988, no. 48. - Paponi. Autograph manuscript, 2 pp. in-4, with numerous corrections. First draft of "Paponat" ending with a dialogue between Croniamantal and the King. This is a first draft of the dialogues on pp. 88-91, 96, 101 ff. of Le Poète assassiné. From the Apollinaire sale of 25 June 1986, no. 13. - an autograph letter signed by Apollinaire "À Paul Dermée Wallon de Liège très cordial souvenir de Guillaume Apollinaire" on the first blank page of a copy of Le Poète assassiné now destroyed, 2 ff. in-12 with pp. 13-14 of the joint edition. - Le Robinson de la gare Saint-Lazare]. Typescript with six autograph corrections by Apollinaire, 6 pp. in-4 (including 2 half sheets). First state with variants of this short story not included in Le Poète assassiné and published posthumously in La Femme assise in 1920. Fragmentary text paginated 115, then 124 to 129. From the Apollinaire sale of 22 April 1994, no. 25. - Proof of p. 105 of Le Poète assassiné entirely crossed out in Apollinaire's hand, 1 p. in-12. "This text corresponds to an extract from Le Passant (Belgian review) and was finally eliminated from the definitive edition of the book".
