APOLLINAIRE Guillaume. Les Mamelles de Tirésias. Surreal drama in two acts and a prologue. With music by Germaine Albert-Birot and seven hors texte drawings by Serge Férat. Paris, Sic, 1918; small square 108-[1] pp. in-8, illustrated cover, sand and taupe paper slipcase. First edition illustrated with 7 drawings by the painter Serge Ferrat, a friend of the poet, who created the sets and costumes for the play. The first performance took place on 24 June 1917, organised by the magazine Sic (Société internationale des cubistes), at the Montmartre theatre, with music by Germaine Albert-Birot (1877-1931), whose scores are printed hors-texte in the book. In his preface, Apollinaire defined his play as surrealist, coining the term well before the movement led by André Breton. Autograph signed letter from Apollinaire to Paul Gsell (1870-1947), writer and theatre critic: "To Paul Gsell so that he may write about it in Le Cri, this modest effort for the repopulation of France by the French. His friend Guillaume Apollinaire". Cover soiled.
