APOLLO LUNAR EARTHSIDE CHART
LMP-1
Florida, USA
1970
103 × 72 cm
Certificate: Letter of authenticity from Steve Zarelli
The lunar surface has about 300 000 craters measuring over 1 kilometre in diameter. In order to map the lunar surface before the Apollo landings, five Lunar Orbiter missions were launched by NASA in 1966 through 1967.
All five missions were successful, and 99% of the Moon was photographed. The first three missions were dedicated to imaging 20 potential lunar landing sites, selected based on Earth-based observations. These were flown at low-inclination orbits. The fourth and fifth missions were devoted to broader scientific objectives and were flown in high-altitude polar orbits.
The Lunar Orbiters had an ingenious imaging system, which consisted of a dual-lens camera, a film processing unit, a readout scanner, and a film-handling apparatus. The double lens took the photos using a sophisticated process. The film was then processed, scanned, and the images transmitted back to Earth.
As a result of these missions, the LFC-1, which would later be rendered obsolete by the LMP series, was created and released in 1967. It was the first chart to be compiled from Lunar Orbiter photography. Then in 1970, the LMP-1 Chart was published. It provided complete coverage of the lunar sphere and served as a basic reference and planning series. It was one of the largest lunar maps ever produced for NASA. All large craters and mare are labelled including the moon’s unique features such as ejecta rays.
At the time, this map represented the best available 1:5 000 000 scale coverage of the entire lunar surface and played a pivotal role for the success of the Apollo missions.
The Lunar Earthside Chart presented here is in pristine condition and features 14 signatures of the most famous astronauts in the history of space exploration. The signatures featured on the chart are:
- Frank Borman, commander of Apollo 8
- Jim Lovell, command module pilot of Apollo 8
- James McDivitt, commander of Apollo 9
- Gene Cernan, lunar module pilot of Apollo 10
- Buzz Aldrin, lunar module pilot of Apollo 11
- Michael Collins, command module pilot of Apollo 11
- Alan Bean, lunar module pilot of Apollo 12
- Richard Gordon, command module pilot of Apollo 12
- Fred Haise, lunar module pilot of Apollo 13
- Edgar Mitchell, lunar module pilot of Apollo 14
- Alfred Worden, command module pilot of Apollo 14
- David Scott, command module pilot of Apollo 9 and commander of Apollo 15
- Charles Duke, lunar module pilot of Apollo 16
