APOSTOOL (Cornelis). View of the fall of the Arve near Sallenche. London, circa 1785. Large watercolour and gouache line engraving, matted sheet, 35.5 x 47 cm. A very fine view of the Arve gorge above Chède. In the foreground, a wooden footbridge and a hunter with his dog. Cornelis Apostool (Amsterdam 1762-1844) was a painter, engraver and diplomat. He was director of the Royal Museum of Amsterdam, now the Rijksmuseum, from its creation in 1814 until his death. A fine proof.
