Lot no. 59
APULÉE. Les Metamorphoses ou l'Asne d'or. Paris, Samuel Thiboust, 1623. 2 parts in one volume in-8, red morocco, double gilt fillet, ornate spine, mottled edges (17th century binding). This is the first illustrated edition of Jean de Montlyard's translation, which scrupulously respected the numerous boldnesses of the original text that were removed by subsequent translators. The edition ends with a voluminous Commentary on the work in separate pagination. Very fine engraved intaglio illustration after Crispin de Passe and Isaac Briot, including a title-frontispiece and 16 full-page figures. An elegant copy bound in antique morocco. From the library of Edward Davies Davenport (1778-1847), with bookplate. Minor rubbing; light spotting.
