APULIAN BELL KRATER DEPICTING WINGED EROS. Ca. 400 - 350 BC. A red-figure bell krater with an inverted bell-shaped body, a broad, flaring rim, and a stemmed foot that expands into a disc-shaped base. The underside of the rim is decorated with a continuous wave pattern. The outward-turned handles extend from the upper body, with large palmettes painted beneath them. Side A depicts a standing, nude Eros, with finely delineated feathers accentuating his wings. His musculature is well defined and he holds a floral wreath in his lowered left hand. Side B features a draped youth striding left, holding a casket in his extended right hand. He wears a chiton with delicately rendered folds cascading around his legs and a himation draped over his left arm. Size: 250mm x 200mm; Weight: 1.1kg Provenance: Property of a central London gallery, previously acquired on the Dutch art market; previously acquired on the Belgium art market; Daniel Bogaerts, Brussels, 1995. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
