H 181, W 122 cm. Shusaku Arakawa studied medicine and mathematics in Tokyo before moving to New York in 1961. First exhibited in the 1960s, his series of «Diagram Paintings» became representative of his conceptual paintings and can be interpreted as phase shift from three-dimensional shape to two-dimensional surface. Despite their analytical scheme, Arakawa's works of art are rather fragile, turning «pseudo-technical» drawings (diagrams) into poetic structures.
