Beautiful armorial binding signed in blond calf, worked in morocco, marbled and decorated with gilding in the spirit of the eighteenth century. Spine ribbed and decorated, brown morocco title-piece. Inner lace, all edges gilt (Holloway). A fine provenance, that of John Benjamin Heath (1790-1879) who was at one time Director of the Bank of England, Consul General of the Kingdom of Sardinia and Baron of the Kingdom of Italy. It is attested by the gilt arms on the upper board and the motto "franc et loyal" of Baron Heath, as well as by his engraved bookplate applied to the reverse of the board. A fine copy. Beautiful contemporary binding in brown chagrin with arms. Titled spine. The boards are decorated with four gilt fleurons at the corners and the arms and motto of the city of Bordeaux. The motto "Lilia sola regunt lunam unda castra leonem", the lilies reign alone over the moon, the waves, the fortress and the lion, clearly alludes to the domination of the King of France over Bordeaux after the period of English occupation. The book bears the following ex-dono on the first blank page: offert au nom de la ville de Bordeaux à M. Emile Brives-Cazès, secrétaire de la commission de publication des Archives municipales, Bordeaux, le 22 janvier 1879, le maire. This text is followed by the signature of the mayor, Albert Brandenburg, and the wet stamp Mairie de Bordeaux, cabinet du maire. The erudite historian Emile Brives-Cazès was a member of the group set up by Jules Delpit to study palaeography, which included Léo Drouyn, Reinhold Dezeimeris, Henri Barckhausen and Gustave Labat.
