Dimensions: 6 x 4.6 cm (rectangle: 5.3 x 3.8 cm) Gross weight of the brooch: 33.9 g. As part of the 1988-1989 Diamonds Awards, a series of brooches was designed in collaboration between Arent & Van Leeuw and Varozza. Each award consists of an original silkscreen print accompanied by a gold sculpture brooch adorned with precious stones. This event is an exceptional opportunity for legendary artists such as a-Ha, Roy Orbison and Donna Summer to perform. Each year, the festival rewards artists who have contributed to modern music, honouring graphic designers, film-makers, singers and musicians. In 1988, the event was held at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp, the capital of diamonds. For each creation, Varozza sought to represent the fields of musical activity through the five senses. Design VI, known as "the record sleeve award", symbolises the record sleeve of the year: a red mouth in red gold, with blue sapphire eyes, supported by an ensemble of gold, brilliants and pearls. The brooch was awarded to the best record sleeve of the year and was accompanied by a 70x70 cm silkscreen print, designed by Varozza, reproduced in the centre of the Diamonds Awards 88-89 booklet. The research for this entry was carried out by Kénya Mézière, an intern in the Paintings and Works of Art Department.
