Lot no. 66
Silverware, Leuven, 18th century
Large tripod coffee pot, solid silver, Louvain and 1771 (Leuven) hallmarks.
H +/- 36 cm.
Note: For centuries, Brabant was one of the centres for the production and use of silverware, with Leuven at the heart of this activity. The city's influence extended far beyond its boundaries. Silver produced in neighbouring towns such as Aarschot, Diest, Tienen and Wavre also bore the Leuven hallmark, giving the concept of Leuven silver a broad scope. The exhibition untangles the geographical web and presents the evolution of fine silverware and the Leuven hallmark. The hallmark represents the city's coat of arms and the key, an attribute of Saint Peter, the city's patron saint. The two symbols are usually accompanied by the year in figures or letters.
