After Lindbergh's crossing of the North Atlantic in May 1927, in the favourable direction of the winds from New York to Paris, Dieudonné Costes wanted to try the opposite direction, but the venture was too dangerous and was halted by the Minister. With Joseph Le Brix as navigator, Costes attempted to cross the South Atlantic from Le Bourget to Saint-Louis in Senegal, then on to Natal in Argentina. This exploit earned them the Légion d'honneur and a triumphant tour of South and North America, and they were even received in the White House by Calvin Coolidge in February 1928.
