Aristide Maillol (Banyuls-sur-Mer, 1861 - 1944)  “Les Maitres du dessin - Maillol” by  Jules Romains. Published four years after the sculptor's death, this book is a portfolio of drawings by Maillol, accompanied by a preface written by the French writer and playwright Jules Romains. This portfolio presents the artist's drawings, a lesser-known aspect of his work, which for him were an essential tool for capturing his ideas and developing his works, both sketches and finished compositions. This is copy number 512 of 1000. Made on pur fil du Marais paper. Printed by Draeger Frères. Published by Flammarion. Paris. 1948. Case dimensions: 48 x 38 cm. Book: 47 x 38 cm. Aristide Maillol's importance is clear when we consider that he lends his name to the Maillol Museum in Paris. Founded by his muse and main model, Dina Vierny, it boasts an impressive collection of the artist's work, as well as hosting temporary exhibitions from the 20th and 21st centuries. MoMa has a significant collection of works by Aristide Maillol, including sculptures and drawings. One of his sculptures, 'The River' (1938–1943), is the centrepiece of the 'Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden' exhibition in the sculpture garden on the first floor of the museum. The Guggenheim Museum in New York also has two Maillol sculptures: Pomone aux bras tombants (1937, inv. 58.1513) and La femme au crabe (c. 1900–1904, inv. 78.2514.26).
