FIREARMS. AUSTRIA. Double-barrelled "Doppelstutzen" model 1768 flintlock rifle converted to percussion for hunting, chequered walnut frame, brass fittings, double octagonal barrels, the upper rifled with 7 helical stripes cal. 14.9 mm, with fixed frog and barley grain sight mounted on brass dovetail, engraved "4" on the breech, the other smoothbore of the same calibre, double trigger, chequered grip stock, trigger guard with finger rests. L: 106 cm, barrels: 66 cm. One mouthpiece screw missing. Circa 1800-1820. ABE These ingenious rifles were used by the border guards of the Austrian Empire, the "Grenzer Scharfschützen", and allowed precision shooting at long range using the rifled barrel.
