Lot no. 303
FIREARMS. Musket of the model of the gendarmerie type 1842 T with walnut mounting, iron trimmings, barrel rifled round with short sides to the thunder struck "PV" (PALIARD-VIALLETON), fixed rise, point of sights, tenon of bayonet, lock before with percussion marked of the imperial manufacture of St-Etienne, iron rod. L: 114 cm, barrel: 76.8 cm. Second Empire period. Weapon cleaned. BE This curious snap hook whose dimensions correspond to the regulation model 1842 was made starting from a rifle of the same system which was shortened. The fittings are in iron, the size of the lock is that of the rifle, the counter-plate also. The barrel markings of the PALIARD-VIALLETON arms manufacturer in Saint-Etienne, which made regulation arms for the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia in particular, suggest that this may have been a "necessity" gun produced for the National Defence government of 1871. This musket came from a town hall in central France that saw combat in the winter of 1870-1871.
