Rare carabinieri officer's sabre with copper-plated brass mounting, hilt with one main branch and 4 secondary branches edged with a fillet decorated in the centre with a domed and flamed grenade, openwork counterguard also edged with a fillet, rectangular-section wooden hilt covered with basane and with a double twisted copper filigree, oval cap with short tail, very slightly curved blade with double sides engraved with floral motifs and trophies of arms in the first quarter, heel signed in a cartouche "Jacques Spol Md Fourbisseur à Metz", leather scabbard without ribs with 3 brass fittings cut in braces and decorated with double lines, asymmetrical iron sting, modern tie. L: 104.5 cm, blade: 89 cm. Directoire period. ABE Jacques SPOL, forger in Metz between 1770-1809, signed an important production of bladed weapons, his brother-in-law is Ch. GOZE, another family of forgers of Metz but also of Verdun. The hilt of this copy is identical to that of a prize copy in the collection of Dr Hutin.
