SWORDS. Horse artillery sabre presumed to have belonged to the Consuls' Guard, brass mounting, hilt with one rounded branch hallmarked "BOUTET" in a cartouche and with the presumed "V" for verification, shuttle-shaped auricles, curved quillon, oval cap with long tail, wooden spindle covered with basane and with a simple twisted brass filigree, curved blade with hollow sides hallmarked with the "M" under the cogwheel of the controller Jean-Jacques MOUTON, back engraved "Manufacture de Klingenthal", scabbard out of brass with 2 leather hollows, 2 splints and 2 trimmings cut out in half-moon, 2 moulded bracelets, of the model of the horse hunters of the Guard, On the top of the long bolt an old handwritten label reads "Arrivé à Amboise dept de l'Indre et Loire le 8 juin 1813" signed "SANIER", below "Arrivé à Blois Loir et Cher le 9 juin 1813" illegible signature, asymmetrical iron dart. L: 98 cm, blade 83,5 cm. Traces of spurs on the bolt. ABE Although not supported by period depictions by Hoffmann or Baron Lejeune, recent work attributes this sabre designed by Boutet to the horse artillery of the Garde des Consuls circa 1800, sometimes with an all-brass scabbard.
