Arnaldo Pomodoro is one of the key protagonists of 20th century Italian sculpture. His oeuvre, which predominantly comprises large bronze sculptures in public spaces and smaller-format bronzes and multiples, is characterised by a consistent exploration of form, space and materiality. When, after completing his studies, in 1955 he joined the ‘Continuità’ group, to which Piero Dorazio and Lucio Fontana also belonged, Pomodoro pursued an approach with his sculptures that involved the reduction of form, characterised by a markedly geometric vocabulary. The perfectly spherical outer form of his "SFERE" series, large bronze sculptures where the interior is literally torn apart by cracks, splits and complex structures, impressively illustrates the dialectic of order and destruction that drove Pomodoro as an artist. In no other series of works is the tension between outer form and inner structure as clearly apparent as here. The sculpture "Porte dell'Edipo" (lot 3464) which is offered at auction here, takes a different approach to the contrast between the hidden and the visible: the leaves of the door can be arranged in different positions, allowing or blocking the viewer's vision. Furthermore, we are pleased to present lots 3465 and 3466, which demonstrate two very contrasting but typical positions of the artist: in the dynamic multiple 'Una Vite "Premio internazionale Leonardo"' (lot 3466) Pomodoro freezes a dynamic rotation as if in the moment, leaving the viewer to wait for the next rotation of the spiral, while in the one-off work "Studio" (lot 3465), the artist presents a more static situation. Schon als er sich nach seinem Studium 1955 der Gruppe "Continuità" anschliesst, der auch Piero Dorazio und Lucio Fontana angehören, verfolgt Pomodoro in der Kreation seiner Skulpturen einen formal reduzierten Ansatz, der sich durch ein stark geometrisches Vokabular auszeichnet. Die perfekte äussere Kugelform seiner Serie der "Sfere", grosse Bronzeskulpturen, deren Inneres durch Risse, Spaltungen und komplexe Strukturen richtiggehend zerrissen wird, veranschaulicht eindrucksvoll die den Künstler umtreibende Dialektik von Ordnung und Destruktion. In keiner anderen Werkreihe tritt die Spannung zwischen äusserer Form und innerem Aufbau so deutlich zu Tage wie hier. Die hier zur Auktion kommende Skulptur "Porte dell´Edipo" (Los 3464), thematisiert den dort gezeigten Gegensatz zwischen Verborgenem und Sichtbarem auf andere Weise: Die Flügel der Tür lassen sich in verschiedenen Stellungen positionieren und gewähren oder verstellen den Blick der Betrachtenden. Des Weiteren dürfen wir die Lose 3465 und 3466, vorstellen, die zwei sehr gegensätzliche, aber ebenfalls typische Positionen des Künstlers demonstrieren: In "Una Vite 'Premio internazionale Leonardo'" (Los 3466), friert Pomodoro eine dynamische Drehung quasi im Moment ein, die die Betrachtenden nur auf die nächste Umdrehung der Spirale warten lässt, während er in der einzelnen Arbeit "Studio" (Los 3465) eine statischere Position aufzeigt. Durch die vielen kleinteiligen Strukturen im Zentrum der konstruktivistisch anmutenden Plastik wohnt aber auch diesem Werk eine mysteriöse Rastlosigkeit inne.
