Lot no. 47
ARNOUX (Guy). French Soldiers at War. Le Soldat français dans les guerres. Paris, Société littéraire de France, 1916.
In-fociété littéraire de Franceolio (324 x 240 mm) of 17 plates, khaki cloth boards, first cover illustrated in colour, smooth mute spine, two blue ink stains on second cover (publisher's boards).
Beautiful album celebrating French military heroes, from Vercingétorix to Marshal Joffre. It contains 17 compositions by Guy Arnoux, wood-engraved by Roulet Hardelay and coloured by Charpentier, under double serpents captioned in English and French.
Published at the height of the war, the work is dedicated to the memory of General Edouard Arnoux (1822-1902), the author's great-uncle. The forward ends with the words "Et puis, on les aura!" (And then we'll have them!).
A very good copy.
