Lot no. 8
ARRIEN. Περίπλους Εὐξείνου Πόντου... Arriani et Hannonis periplus. Plutarchus de fluminibus et montibus. Straboonis epitome. Basel, Hieronymus Froben & Nicolaus Episcopius, 1533. Small in-4, granite calf, fawn calf border framed with cold fillets and scrolls, three-ribbed spine, smooth edges (17th century English binding). First edition.
The work, published by Sigismund Gelenius, gives for the first time Arrien's Periplus of the Euxine Bridge (Black Sea), the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea (Red Sea), formerly attributed to Arrien, and Hannon's Periplus from Carthage to the Columns of Hercules (Gibraltar). It also contains the pseudo-Plutarchan opuscule on the Origin of the names of rivers and mountains and an abridged version of Strabo's Geography known as the Chrestomathies. These two Greek geographical treatises, along with Arrien's and Hannon's Periples, have come down to us thanks to Palatinus Heidelbergensis gr. 398, a precious ninth-century Byzantine manuscript held by the University of Heidelberg.
Froben's typographical mark adorns the title and last leaf.
A precious annotated copy by Lilio Gregorio Giraldi (1479-1552), a humanist and poet from Ferrara, considered one of the most erudite men of his time, prothonotary apostolic under Leo X and Clement VII and a friend of J.-F. Pico della Mirandola. His complete works were printed in 1580 and again in 1696. He had studied Greek literature under Demetrios Chalcondyle in Milan.
The volume has numerous marginal annotations in his hand in Greek (sometimes reached by the binder's knife), as well as his bookplate in Greek (Λιολιου Γρηγοριου Γιραλδου) and his handwritten numeral on the title.
Binding restored, endpapers and title-piece renewed, marginal dampstaining.
