This lot includes the first and only edition of a historical-archaeological study on the precious Byzantine reliquary of the True Cross, donated by Cardinal Bessarion in 1463 to the Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Carità in Venice; Maffei's defence of theatre against the obscurantist attacks launched by Father Daniele Concina, particularly against the author himself; the first Italian translation of William Hogarth's Analysis of Beauty, published eight years after the original 1753 London edition; and the first reproduction and study of Fra Mauro's celebrated Mappa Mundi, the monumental world map painted on parchment in the early 15th century, now housed in the Biblioteca Marciana.
