Art Déco animal figure "Polecat with young" by Max Esser. Polecat standing on a raised, stylised natural base, rearing up and turning around. The slender, elongated body with a curved back is powerfully turned to the right. Fur pattern in light relief. Below the two skulking polecat cubs. Sparsely accentuated, polychrome painting in various shades of brown with gold contouring. Designed by Max Esser, 1926, model no. 78708, crossed swords mark. H. 37 cm.
The important animal sculptor Max Esser (1885 - 1945) studied at the renowned training centre of the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin and at the Berlin Art Academy under August Gaul. In the 1920s and 1930s, he created numerous expressive animal models in porcelain and Böttger stoneware in the Art Deco style for the Meissen manufactory. His 1934 sculpture "Otter" won a Grand Prix at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris.
