Lot no. 90
ARTAUD (Antonin). Le Pèse-nerfs. Paris, Pour vos beaux yeux, 1925. In-4, paperback, cover illustrated by André Masson. First edition, printed in an edition of 65 copies only. One of the 15 first copies on japon, signed by the author in violet pencil. It bears No. III. The Pour vos beaux yeux collection was created and financed by Jacques Doucet, who appointed Louis Aragon as its editor. Le Pèse-nerfs was the first and only title to appear in this collection, which is unusual in that it has no title page. The cover is illustrated with a large composition by André Masson created especially for the book, and a small drawing by the same artist on the second cover. Le Pèse-nerfs, followed by the three Lettres de ménage, is presented as a succession of letters from Artaud to imaginary readers to whom he describes the existential malaise that makes life unbearable for him: "What you took for my works was only the waste of myself, the scrapings of the soul that moral man does not welcome". A very rare copy on Japan paper, preserved as issued.
