Lot no. 135
ARTHUR JOHN STRUTT (Chelmsford, 1818 - Rome, 1888) View of the Falls of Tivoli Oil on canvas, 96X175.5 cm The son of the landscape painter Jacob George Strutt, whose pupil he was, he travelled through France and Switzerland in the company of his father before both came to Italy in 1831 to settle permanently in Rome. He remained in Italy for the rest of his life, taking an interest in the picturesque aspects, particularly those of the Roman countryside and turning his attention to the landscapes and customs of its inhabitants. In 1841, he undertook a journey on foot to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in the company of his friend William Jackson, leaving from Porta San Giovanni on 30 April and arriving in Palermo on 15 December after passing through Campania and Calabria. His impressions were collected in the volume 'A Journey on Foot in Calabria and Sicily', which was a great success especially in Anglo-Saxon countries and is still considered an important source for knowledge of the society of the time. The canvas can be compared with the smaller canvas (oil on canvas, 80.5X139) sold at Sotheby's in London on 2 May 1972, lot 146.
