ASHANTI, Ghana.
According to the exit permit form, this large terracotta pot was made for King Asante Mampong for storing herbal medicine, which was used as an anointment for the king and drunk as a strong protection against enemy forces when he was away.
This large and rare pot is covered with marks found on the geometric weights used to weigh the gold powder.
Height: 75 cm.
Slight crazing.
Provenance: Collection of a couple of collectors, Blois. Acquired in February 2006 from the Afrique Noire gallery (K and JF Parry), 54 rue Mazarine, 75006, Paris.
