Provenance: Service presented by King Louis XV to King Christian VII of Denmark in July 1769. A soft-paste Sevres porcelain plate, 18th century, dated 1769, the painting by Dominique Jouffroy, by King Christian VII of Denmark's service This plate comes from a service with a pebbled lapis base given in two stages by King Louis XV to King Christian VII of Denmark. The first part of the service was presented on 9 November 1768 when Christian VII was visiting Paris between October and December 1768, travelling incognito under the title of Prince of Travendhal. On this occasion, on 9 November 1768, the King of Denmark visited the Sèvres manufactory for three hours and that same evening received delivery of the porcelain service at the York Hotel where he was staying in Paris. This first part of the service comprised 48 plates with gauderons at 36 livres each. The second part of the service was delivered on 1 July 1769, mentioned as "Supplément au Présent fait Par le Roy à Sa Majesté Dannoise" (Arch. Sèvres, Vy4, f° 180), again comprising 48 plates. Most of the service is now kept at Rosenborg and Christianborg castles in Copenhagen, where three plates are missing (see D. Peters, Sèvres Plates and Services, 2015, vol. II, n° 68-4 and 69-4 pp. 417-418).
