Lot no. 118
HISTORICAL PLATE - Fish merchant
Historic plate in white earthenware, painted in blue monochrome. Decorated with a haggling scene between a couple and a figure of a queen seated on a crowned and haloed toue de la loire type boat holding out a fish and an eel. Inscription: ".à. Six livre la Carpe Et languille / .Moy. je.nen.Veut donner que Cent dix soll. / .1777."
Nevers, late 18th century.
Diameter: 23.1 cm
(Slightly damaged)
An almost identical plate is in the Musée des Beaux Arts d'Angers [N° inv. AMD 1767 Ob].
Is this curious representation a mockery of the Marquise de Pompadour, née Jeanne Poisson? The haggling scene could be an allusion to the kingdom's finances, which were reputedly squandered by the favourite.
