PATRONYM PLATE - Louis and Elisabeth Courtois, 1770

This is the marriage of Louis Courtois, a sailor, and Elisabeth Deribère, who were married on 10 August 1762 at Saint-Jean-l'Evangéliste in Châtellerault (Vienne). Their marriage certificate, which we have consulted in the parish registers, clearly states Louis' personal signature as "Courtony", despite the unequivocal Courtois family identification. This unique singularity and his profession as a sailor make it certain that the household that is the subject of the plate we are presenting can be identified.
