Koeman's Atlantes Neerlandici, vol. 1, p. 514, 1:801B, variant b. - {Complete set of all maps of one of the most beautiful celestial atlases ever printed}. - The "Atlas Coelestis" by the astronomer and mathematician Andreas Cellarius (1596-1665), who was born Andreas Keller in the Electoral Palatinate and worked in the Netherlands from the 1620s, is considered one of the most beautiful and sought-after of its kind. 29 maps form a "summa" of the knowledge of ancient and contemporary astronomy, including the theories of Ptolemy, Copernicus and Tycho Brahe. The maps contain images of the sky and diagrams of the orbits of the sun, moon and planets. They are richly illustrated with ornate cartouches and baroque jewellery such as putti in clouds, shells and garlands, as well as portraits of famous astronomers and illustrations of astronomical instruments. - The title copper shows Urania - the muse of astronomy - with an armillary sphere on her lap, surrounded by famous astronomers such as Tycho Brahe and Nicolaus Copernicus as well as brass instruments. The "Harmonia Macrocosmica" was first published in 1660 by the Amsterdam publisher Johannes Jansson. A new edition was published in 1661, from which this complete set of maps, including the engraved title page, originates. - Title with narrow trimming, leaves 1 and 29 with marginal tears, leaf 1 with small tear without loss of text, all leaves backed at the folds, some leaves somewhat fingerstained and with minor marginal browning.
