Lot no. 197
[ATLAS]. Atlante novissimo, illustrato ed accresciuto sulle osservazioni, e scoperte fatte dai più celebri e più recenti geografers. Venice: Zatta, 1775-1785. A copy assembled to meet the requirements of its original owner in the early 19th century of this celebrated atlas, here with elegant hand-colouring. The maps were mainly drawn by Giovanni Pitteri and engraved by Giuliano Zuliani. Among the highlights are the refined world map, the large twelve-sheet map of the United States, and the three plates titled New Discoveries by the Russians, New Discoveries in the South Sea, and New Zealand. 4 parts in 1 volume, oblong folio (540 x 400mm). Double copper-engraved title-page, 159 (of 215) maps with fine contemporary hand-colouring, trimmed at the outer margins to allow binding on the left-hand side, manuscript index at end, early manuscript foliation at top margin (lacking the title-pages for the individual parts, the preface, the textual sections, and the table of contents for each part). Early 19th-century binding with green roan-backed boards (wear and losses). Please contact the department for a list of the included maps and their composition. (1)
