Little is known about the personality and career of this rare artist, whose identity was suggested to us by Joost Vander Auwera. He mentions stylistic parallels with this pupil of Sebastian Vrancx, especially in the figures and horses. A small painting by Balthazar Courtois, painted on silver plate1, monogrammed and signed, provides a valuable stylistic reference for our oak panel.
1 - Anonymous sale; Amsterdam, Christie's, 10 May 2006, lot 244 (The Battle of Leckerbeetje, oil on silver, monogrammed and dated 'BvC 1614', 16.6 x 17.9 cm).
We would like to thank Mr Joost Vander Auwera for suggesting this attribution.
