PROVENANCE (according to the inscription on the reverse) :
Collection of the model's sister, Rosalie de Noailles, Mademoiselle de Montclar (1767-1852). She married Théodule, Marquis de Grammont in 1786;
Collection of the model's daughter, Marie-Paule-Sophie de Montagu (1805-1880), Countess d'Auberville. In 1824 she married Adolphe de Gaillard de Ferré d'Auberville (1791-1841).
Anne-Paule-Dominique, known as Pauline, de Noailles, Mademoiselle de Maintenon, was the daughter of Jean Louis Paul François de Noailles and Henriette d'Aguesseau. In 1783 she married Joachim-Charles-Louis, Marquis de Montagu (1764-1834). From a family affected by the Revolution (her mother and sister were guillotined in 1794), the Marquise de Montagu went into exile in England in 1791 with her husband Joachim de Montagu-Beaune and returned to France in 1800. Known for her piety and commitment to royalty, she supported the memory of the victims of the Terror.
We would like to thank Neil Jeffares for his suggestion of attribution and his help in identifying the model. He likens our pastel to a group of a dozen or so pastels depicting women in a landscape, often carrying a book, such as the Duchesse de Guiche, a member of the de Grammont family, the family of our model's brother-in-law.
Neil Jeffares notes that the biography of Anne-Paule-Dominique de Noailles, Marquise de Montagu, published by Paul, Duc de Noailles in Paris in 1865 (2nd ed.), mentions "her portrait (that of Pauline de Noailles) of her at the age of seventeen, seated in the middle of a garden", which she gave to her sister on her marriage in 1783 (Paul, Duc de Noailles, Anne-Paule-Dominique de Noailles, Marquise de Montagu, Paris, 2nd ed, 1865, p. 23).
